Fletcher said after meeting with President Michel Suleiman that his country will supply Lebanon with 45 million U.S. dollars to beef up its army's abilities and 75 million dollars to support the state with the Syrian refugees crisis, according to a statement by the British Embassy in Beirut. Meanwhile, the British diplomat hailed the president's efforts to maintain stability in the country, stressing that Britain will carry out necessary international contacts to neutralize Lebanon from the conflict in the region. More than 604,000 Syrians have fled their country to Lebanon, according to a report of UN Higher Refugees Council. Lebanon has frequently called on the UN Security Council and international donors to help it shoulder the burden of hosting the Syrian refugees, the number of which is expected to cross the threshold of 1 million by the end of the year. |
