The Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) is the U.S. Army’s proposed replacement for the Vietnam-era M-113 personnel carriers, which are still in service in a variety of support capacities in Armored Brigade Combat Teams (ABCTs). While M-113s no longer serve as infantry fighting vehicles, five variants of the M-113 are used as command and control vehicles, general purpose vehicles, mortar carriers, and medical treatment and evacuation vehicles. An estimated 3,000 of these M-113 variants are currently in service with the U.S. Army.
The program is essential to the future of the Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) and will fulfill the Army’s strategy of protection, mobility, reliability, and interoperability. The AMPV, which will be integrated with the ABCT, is required to operate alongside the M1 Abrams tank and the M2 Bradley. AMPV has been identified by the Army as its top priority for the safety and survivability of our soldiers, and therefore, must meet tough protection requirements. The US Army has a requirement for 2,907 vehicles in five versions including 386 120 mm Mortar Carrier Vehicles, 993 Mission Command Vehicles, 790 Medical Evacuation Vehicles, 216 Medical Treatment Vehicles and 216 general purpose. In January 2015, BAE was awarded a contract for Engineering, Manufacturing, and Development (EMD) and Low-Rate Initial Production (LRIP) of the vehicle on 23 December, for an amount of $1.2 billion. The AMPV has a new layout compared to standard tracked APC (Armoured Personnel Carrier) with a large internal volume to offer more comfort for crew and troops. The hull of the AMPV consists of a new all-welded aluminium armour and explosive reactive armour to offer more protection against anti-tank rockets and missiles. |
