The T-72B is one of the export version of the basic model T-72. The T-72B MBT (Main Battle Tank) is developed from the Russian main battle tank T-72A. It was entered in service with the Russian army in 1984.

Main armament of the T-72B main battle tank consists of one 125mm special smoothbore gun/launcher 2A46M. The 125 mm gun is stabilised in both planes. The T-72B can also fire the ZUBK14 round comprises a guided rocket, designated 9M119 AT-11. This ammunition is fitted with the 9K120 guided weapons system, dubbed Svir, enables the crew to fire the guided rockets while the tank is stationary, day and night to a range from 100 to 4,000m.

The T-72B1 is similar to the T-72B without the capability to fire the AT-11 `Svir' laser-guided projectile. T-72B1 is also fitted Kontakt-1 explosive reactive armour (ERA) developed in the mid-1980s.

Currently, Sudanese armed forces are equipped with Russian T-55 and T-72, Chinese Type 59, Type 69, Type 96 and Type 85MII Al-Bashier which is a Sudanese-made main battle tank based on the Chinese Type 85-II.
