The commander of the 42th Missile Division, Mayor General Eduard Starovoytenko pointed out that the 2015 arms and military equipment deliveries to the unit plan had been fully implemented on time. "Two missile regiments equipped with RS-24 Yars (NATO reporting name: SS-27 Mod 2) mobile ICBM systems took duties in December 2015", Starovoytenko mentioned. According to him, one more missile regiment was being re-equipped with Yars systems.
Five missile regiments of SMF are reported to get 20 new Yars missiles in 2016. As of end-2015, the service was 56% rearmed with modern missile systems. Russian Ministry of Defense intends to increase this share to 100% by 2022. The RS-24 Yars also known as RT-24 Yars is a Russian MIRV-equipped, thermonuclear weapon intercontinental ballistic missile first tested on May 29, 2007, after a secret military R&D project, to replace the older R-36 and UR-100N that have been in use for nearly 50 years. It has an operational range of 11,000km according to Russian Goverment's sources, and reaches speed of Mach 20 (24,500 km/h). It carries at least 4 MIRVs with 150-250 kiloton warheads. |
