The Ruselectronics Group, part of Russia’s Rostec state hi-tech corporation, has developed a passive coherent radar designed for stealthy detection of moving aerial, ground and above-water targets in the protected area of important facilities, the group’s press office said.

"The advanced system can be used to protect the facility’s perimeter, provide air traffic support and control ship navigation. It has the all-round observation capability, can detect targets and measure their coordinates at a radius of 100 kilometers [62 miles], track targets, transmit data to the operator’s display and take measures in case of an intrusion," the press office said.
The system uses radio transmitting centers’ TV and FM signals reflected by moving objects. Thus, the system can operate in areas where conventional radars cannot be used. In particular, the advanced system detects small targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), at extremely low altitudes in urban areas. The system comprises antennas, a signal receiving and processing device and computers with special software. It can be furnished with video surveillance devices and other additional protection equipment. The system is being developed by the Vektor Research Institute that is a Ruselectronics Group subsidiary. The institute has developed a prototype radar that has proved its effectiveness. It has 15 antennas, one of them is directed to the emission source and the others receive the signal reflected by planes, ships, vehicles and even persons. For example, it can detect a UAV within 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), vehicles and persons within less than 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) and ships within 80 kilometers (50 miles). |
