In 2016 several batteries of the Russian air defense system S-300 were deployed at the naval base in Tartus to protect the base itself and Russian warships off Syrian shores. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said a multi-tier air defense had been created around Tartus and the Hmeymim air base. At the end of November the newest air defense system S-400 was delivered to Syria after a Turkish F-16 fighter shot down Russian Su-24 bomber.
Pantsir systems protect Russian military facilities from low-flying aircraft and missiles. The defense of Russian facilities also incorporates the Bastion complex capable of hitting naval and ground targets 350-450 kilometers away. Russia has helped Syria to restore the operation of its S-200 air defense systems that protect Russian bases from potential attacks from the east. Also, the Syrian army has air defense systems Buk (The Buk-M2 can engage a wide variety of targets from aircraft to missiles flying at an altitude of between 10 and 24,000 m out a maximum range of 50 km in given conditions). |
