"The RPK-16 is an upgraded version of the RPK-74 machinegun. The Russian Defense Ministry has placed an order for a preproduction batch to be supplied by the Kalashnikov Corporation in 2017," the press office said.

The RPK-16 light machinegun was developed by Kalashnikov at its own expense and unveiled at the Army 2016 International Military-Technical Forum in the Patriot Park (Moscow Region).

The 5.45-mm RPK-16 has a detachable barrel and, upon its replacement with a shorter one, can be used as an assault rifle. A larger magazine with the 96-round capacity has been developed specifically to equip the machinegun. It fits the Kalashnikov assault rifles as well.
