On 29 March 2004, Slovak became, alongside Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Slovenia, a member of NATO alliance. For the past 13 years, thousands of Slovak soldiers have rotated in and out of the international crisis management operations conducted under the umbrella of NATO.

In February 2017 during a NATO meeting in Brussels, the Slovak (SVK) Minister of Defense underlined that in light of the security reality it is inevitable to be equipped with state-of-the-art military equipment according to NATO standard. He informed his colleagues of Slovakia having allocated considerable funding for modernization and deliveries of military assets, and that this year alone the defense budget in the SVK REP has risen by 12 per cent.
