"Over the past years, KBM [Engineering Design Bureau] has developed over 20 precision-guided weapon systems and their versions. In accordance with the armament development and production strategy, we are intent on improving the tactical missile systems. An upgraded version of the Iskander-M tactical missile system will be unveiled after 2020," Chemezov said.

Earlier, KBM General Designer Valery Kashin had told TASS that the Iskander-M would remain in service for 25-30 years and the Russian Defense Ministry was pondering a proposal for its upgrade. According to Kashin, the term of the current contract on the Iskander-M is until 2017 inclusive.

The 9K720 Iskander is designed to take out point and area targets in the enemy’s rear area. It comprises vehicles of several types, including a self-propelled launcher on an MZKT chassis, a transporter-loader, a command vehicle, etc. The system fires the 9M723 single-stage solid-propellant missile with a range of up to 500 km. Its warhead may be either a high-explosive one or a cluster bomb dispenser.
