On July 24, 2022, the Army Recognition editorial team reported that the U.S. will send four more M142 HIMARS MLRSs (Multiple Launch Rocket Systems) to Ukraine. Today, the Ukrainian armed forces have a total of 16 HIMARS.
Citing information from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, the M142 HIMARS donated by the United States showed great effectiveness in battles against Russian forces. According to pictures and videos published on Social Networks, dozens of Russian arms depots have been hit and destroyed by rockets launched by the U.S. HIMARS operated by Ukrainian troops.
The HIMARS operated by the Ukrainian soldiers are a nightmare for Russian troops, and it become priority targets due to their capabilities to reach a ground target at a range of up to 70 km using guided rockets. Citing information published by the "EUROMAIDAN PRESS" website, Since the first HIMARS were delivered to Ukraine a few weeks ago, the Ukrainian Army has destroyed more than 20 Russian artillery depots and storage bases in various oblasts across the country, including the territory of occupied Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts and the territory of the self-proclaimed ‘Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.’
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has requested the United States to provide more HIMARS MLRS in order to gain a tactical advantage over the Russian troops who have a large number of mobile rocket launcher systems.
The HIMARS M142 is one of the most modern Multiple Launch Rocket Systems in the world. It is able to fire guided and unguided rockets at a maximum firing range of 70 km as well as tactical missiles at a maximum firing range of 300 km.
The M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) is a combat-proven, wheeled artillery system, rapidly deployable via C-130 and operable in all weather and visibility conditions. The rocket launcher station of the HIMARS is mounted on a five-ton modified Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles chassis. The wheeled chassis allows for faster road movement and lower operating costs and requires far fewer strategic airlifts (via C-5 or C-17) to transport a firing battery than the tracked M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) that it replaces.
The M142 HIMARS provides responsive, highly accurate, and extremely lethal surface-to-surface rocket and missile fires from 15 to 300 kilometers.
