Chad's recent deployment demonstrates their commitment to strengthening defense capabilities and enhancing border security in the region by utilizing advanced armored vehicles.
In 2021, Chad ordered 60 Terrier LT-79 tactical armored vehicles from The Armored Group (TAG), a manufacturer based in the United Arab Emirates. Some of these vehicles were showcased during a parade in August of the same year, which celebrated Chad's 61 years of independence. These vehicles were operated by an elite unite called the Directorate General of Security Services of the State Institutions (DGSSIE).
The DGSSIE elements of the parade also featured two Arquus Bastion vehicles, in the same APC variant delivered to Mali and Burkina Faso by the European Union as part of the G5 Sahel Joint Force, of which Chad is a member. The Division of Special Anti-Terrorist Groups (DGSAT) displayed two more Bastion vehicles of the same variant. Chad received seven Bastions in 2019/2020, financed by the European Union, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The DGSAT also showcased two Turkish-made Ejder Yalçin APCs, making their first public appearance, along with six Nigerian-made Proforce Ara 2 vehicles.
The Chadian military employs a diverse range of APCs and infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) from different countries, including France, China, Israel, Turkey, and the United States, as well as modernized Soviet-era vehicles. The Chadian armored fleet also includes vehicles such as Bastion Patsas, BMP-1, David ULAV, and ERC-90.
The Terrier LT-79 is constructed using a reinforced and militarized Toyota VDJ79 truck chassis and Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components. It has a combat weight of 5.6 tonnes. The vehicle can be built to CEN B6-level or NIJ-III protection standards and is powered by a 195 HP high sulfur 1VD-FTV Toyota 4.5L V8 turbo-diesel engine. It is available in left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive (RHD) configurations. With upgraded axles, clutch, reinforced frame, and large super single wheels, the vehicle offers excellent mobility and high payload capacity in all operating environments.
The Terrier LT-79 is agile, extremely versatile, and designed to protect individuals in hazardous operational environments. It is expected to become a crucial means of transportation for SWAT teams, law enforcement, and military personnel who require a highly armored vehicle while remaining cost-effective and budget-friendly.
The TAG Terrier LT-79 armored vehicle is entirely built on the Toyota 79 chassis, which explains its designation. It comes as a standard three-door configuration with a seating arrangement of 2+6. Variants are also available in five-door configurations, as well as light surveillance, remote firing post (with RWS capability), and aircraft assault platforms, all of which can be tailored to meet specific operational requirements. Chad's vehicles are equipped with a weapon station armed with a 12.7 mm DShK-type machine gun.
