The SSW40 is designed to strike a balance between firepower, versatility, and user comfort. It closely resembles conventional assault rifles in terms of weight, dimensions, and handling, which facilitates ease of use for infantry personnel. A notable feature of the SSW40 is its recoil-reducing and self-regulating system, enabling it to fire various 40mm Low Velocity (LV) ammunition types and the new Rheinmetall 40mm Medium Velocity (MV) ammunition.

The newly developed 40mm MV ammunition offers increased velocity and a flat trajectory, extending the effective range of the SSW40 to 900 meters. This advancement, in conjunction with Rheinmetall's existing 40mm LV/MV ammunition portfolio, provides infantry units with enhanced flexibility and effectiveness in engaging targets.

The SSW40's development is closely tied to the turret-independent secondary weapon system (TSWA) for the Puma infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). The TSWA allows for the engagement of nearby targets using non-lethal and lethal warheads from the new 40mm MV ammunition family. The introduction of this ammunition family significantly influenced the SSW40's development, with completion expected in 2023.

The 40mm MV ammunition family is the result of Rheinmetall's experience in 40mm LV and High Velocity (HV) ammunition. As a result, the SSW40 can be loaded with various ammunition types, including High-Explosive Fragmentation (HEFRAG), Anti-Tank (HEDP), Door Breaching (HEBE), Air Burst (HEAB), Training (TPM, TPM-T), Illumination/Fog, Sound & Flash, and Riot Control Ammunition (CS).

The SSW40's rapid magazine change capability enhances its adaptability in different terrains and situations, including engagements with medium-weight armored vehicles. Additionally, the weapon system features versatile interfaces, allowing for the integration of various accessories such as laser light modules, fire control units, IR programmers for airburst ammunition, and compatibility with ring mounts and bipods.
