This new aid for Ukraine is part of a €113 million military package that was already approved by the Estonian government in January 2023. At the same time, Estonia will also deliver to Ukraine 155mm and 122mm ammunition as well as Carl-Gustav anti-tank rocket weapon systems.
In January 2023, Estonia announced its biggest military aid package for Ukraine for an amount of €113 million consisting of howitzers, ammunition, artillery support equipment, and grenade launchers. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Estonia has provided assistance to Ukraine for a total of €370 million which is more than 1% of Estonia's GDP (Gross Domestic Product).
The D-30 is a Soviet-designed 122 mm towed howitzer that entered service in 1963. It is also known as the 2A18 and is widely used by many countries around the world.
The D-30 has a conventional design, with a barrel that is mounted on a carriage and a trail that provides stability and support during firing. The breech mechanism is located at the back of the barrel and is used to load and unload ammunition. The carriage provides support for the barrel and allows it to be elevated and depressed to adjust the range and trajectory of the fired shell. The carriage also includes wheels or tracks to allow for towing and transportation.
The D-30 howitzer is typically operated by a crew of 8-10 personnel, depending on the specific mission and operational requirements.
The D-30 howitzer has a maximum effective range of up to 15.3 kilometers (9.5 miles) depending on the type of ammunition used. The maximum range can be increased up to 21.9 kilometers (13.6 miles) by using special long-range projectiles.
