On January 25, 2023, Germany agreed to the initial delivery of 14 Leopard 2 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs), and more specifically the 2A6 version which is considered as one of the most powerful MBTs in the world.
On February 14, 2023, the Army Recognition editorial team reported that eight countries including Canada, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, and Spain work together to provide Leopard 2A4 and Leopard 2A6 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) to Ukraine.
With the delivery of Leopard 2A6 to Ukraine, the Ukrainian army will be equipped with one of the most modern main battle tanks in the world. However, this tank has never been tested against Russian tanks like the T-72, T-80, and the brand new T-90M.
Both the Leopard 2A6 and the Russian T-90M are advanced main battle tanks with their own unique advantages, but according to the technical specifications, the Leopard 2A6 offers more combat capabilities in terms of firepower, protection, and mobility.
The Leopard 2A6 is equipped with a 120mm smoothbore gun that has a longer range and higher muzzle velocity than the T-90M's 125mm gun. This gives the Leopard 2A6 an advantage in terms of accuracy, penetration power, and effective range.
The Leopard 2A6 has a heavily armored turret and hull, including composite and reactive armor, that provides excellent protection against a variety of threats, including armor-piercing shells and anti-tank missiles. While the T-90M also has strong armor protection, it may not be as effective against the most advanced anti-tank weapons.
The Leopard 2A6 has a powerful engine and a sophisticated suspension system that allows it to move quickly and smoothly over rough terrain. This makes it more agile and maneuverable than the T-90M, which can be an advantage in certain tactical situations.
The Leopard 2A6 has advanced targeting systems, including thermal imaging cameras, laser rangefinders, and computerized fire control systems that allow the crew to acquire and engage targets quickly and accurately. While the T-90M also has advanced targeting systems, the Leopard 2A6's systems are considered to be among the best in the world.
