Germany commits to €400 Mn aid package for Ukraine at Ramstein meeting.

On 19 September 2023, during the 15th meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group at Ramstein Air Base, Germany pledged a €400 million aid package aimed at bolstering the Ukrainian military. The announcement was made by Parliamentary State Secretary Siemtje Möller and Inspector General Carsten Breuer, who was standing in for Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, currently ill with COVID-19.

The meeting saw participation from representatives of nearly 50 countries and institutions, including the EU, NATO, Kosovo, Morocco, and Australia, to coordinate ongoing military support for Ukraine against Russian aggression. The German aid package will focus on key areas such as artillery, air defense, ammunition, resilience, and training.

The German Defense Ministry had previously supplied Ukraine with two Patriot Phased Array Tracking Radars to Intercept Target systems and corresponding guided missiles. The new package includes 30,000 rounds of 155mm artillery ammunition, 3,800 rounds of smoke ammunition for 155mm artillery, and 105,000 rounds of various types of 120mm mortar ammunition. Additionally, 480 AT-2 mines will be provided to enhance Ukraine's defensive capabilities.

To counter the extensive minefields laid by Russian forces, Germany will supply 200 Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected (MRAP) vehicles specialized in mine clearance. The aid package also includes winter gear, spare parts for previously supplied systems, and transport vehicles to improve the Ukrainian military's resilience in the coming months. A mobile field hospital has already been delivered.

Germany has trained nearly 7,000 Ukrainian soldiers since the onset of the Russian invasion and plans to train a total of 10,000 by the end of the year. The focus of the training is on leadership at the tactical level, including squad leaders, platoon leaders, and company commanders.

Germany reaffirms its unwavering support for Ukraine and promises quick delivery of the pledged equipment. The training programs for Ukrainian forces in Germany will continue, including specialized training in engineering and air defense systems.
