This initiative follows the announcement on January 5, 2023, where Germany pledged to supply Patriot  PAC-3 missile batteries to Ukraine. Since the outbreak of the conflict, the German government has demonstrated its support for Ukraine through several measures, including substantial humanitarian assistance and the provision of weaponry. Specifically, Germany has allocated over 14.2 billion euros in bilateral aid, supporting winter assistance programs and contributing to investigations of war crimes as well as humanitarian demining operations.

Germany has also showcased its commitment to Ukraine by furnishing military equipment from its own Bundeswehr inventory, as well as delivering defense industry assets funded by the government budget.

To date, the German armed forces possess a total of 30 launcher units of the Patriot PAC-3 air defense missile system. The Patriot PAC-3 M902 air defense missile system, developed by the United States, is designed to intercept and counter ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and enemy aircraft. Its interception strategy focuses on the terminal phase, aiming to destroy the threat near its intended impact point. Unlike previous Patriot iterations, which targeted mid-course phase threats, the PAC-3 missile boasts a range of about 20 km (12.4 miles) and can achieve speeds of up to Mach 5. Its hit-to-kill interceptor mechanism obliterates the target through direct collision.

Germany's military assistance to Ukraine encompasses a wide range of equipment, including armored vehicles, air defense systems, precision artillery, engineering capabilities, protective gear, logistical resources, and combat readiness components. This aid also incorporates all-terrain vehicles, reconnaissance drones, anti-drone detection systems, communication systems, and a diverse array of medical and survival materials. These provisions underscore Germany's dedication to supporting Ukraine in its security and defense efforts.
