Irish Army will provide weapons training to Ukrainian soldiers.

| 2023

According to a report from rte.ie, the Irish Army is set to deploy around 30 personnel to train Ukrainian soldiers as part of a broader European team of trainers involved in an EU Common Security and Defence Policy mission. Initially, the training was planned to encompass activities such as landmine clearance, combat medicine, and other non-lethal forms of support. However, the Department of Defence has now confirmed that this training will also encompass weapons instruction.

The training being offered by Ireland involves providing fundamental military education to transition individuals from civilian life to becoming members of the Ukrainian Army. This effort is being conducted with the understanding of Ireland's policy of neutrality while simultaneously acknowledging Ireland's political backing of Ukraine.

Earlier this year, the Irish Government sanctioned the participation of the Defence Forces in the EU Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM), which is offering assistance to Ukraine. Recent information, as reported by TRE, discloses that the Government has additionally authorized "further training programs endorsed by the Government in July 2023" that concentrate on essential aspects of military training identified by the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF), along with instruction on specific demining equipment provided by Ireland.

The training areas will encompass basic military leadership and training for drill instructors. The Government affirms that this move aligns with the commitments outlined in the Programme for Government, clarifying that no weaponry is being supplied to the UAF. The Government contends that providing foundational military training, including leadership and drill instruction, remains consistent with the policy of military neutrality.

Deputy Brophy underscored the significance of providing this training, considering it as an act of solidarity. He remarked, "Given the circumstances where many Ukrainian citizens who were leading ordinary lives not long ago now find themselves compelled to take up arms against aggressive forces, I believe the assistance we offer through training holds great importance."

The Government emphasizes that its actions do not violate its policy of neutrality. Unfortunately, current Russian actions in Ukraine are leaving no room for peaceful resolution.
