The focus of the raid was the Sajaya neighborhood, where IDF (Israel Defense Forces) aircraft and artillery targeted positions of Hamas, recognized by Israel and several international entities as a terrorist organization. The operation extended throughout the Gaza Strip, aiming to neutralize threats and assess the combat capabilities and weapons of the Hamas group.

This follows a previous tank incursion into the region, reported on October 26, 2026, led by the Givati Brigade from Division 162, which executed a nighttime combat operation using Merkava 4 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs). These raids are seen as potential precursors to a more extensive ground operation, allowing the IDF to gauge the strength and response of Hamas.

Military analysts suggest that these actions by the IDF could be part of a broader strategy to weaken Hamas's infrastructure and gather intelligence before launching a large-scale ground offensive. The objective would be to dismantle Hamas's capabilities and ensure the security of Israel.

The situation remains tense, with the international community closely monitoring developments. The possibility of a larger ground operation has raised concerns about the potential for increased civilian casualties and further escalation of the conflict in the region. The IDF's actions and the response from Hamas will be critical in determining the course of events in the coming days.

The Merkava 4 is a main battle tank that stands as a testament to advanced military engineering, primarily used by the Israeli Defense Forces. It is particularly noted for its exceptional combat capabilities and formidable firepower. One of the most distinctive features of the Merkava 4 is its advanced modular armor, which provides robust protection against a variety of threats. This is further enhanced by its unique design, where the engine is placed in the front, offering additional protection for the crew.

In terms of firepower, the Merkava 4 is equipped with a 120 mm smoothbore gun, capable of firing a range of ammunition types. This is complemented by a sophisticated fire control system that ensures high accuracy and efficiency in various combat scenarios. The tank also features a 12.7 mm machine gun and a 7.62 mm machine gun, adding to its versatile offensive capabilities.

Another notable aspect of the Merkava 4 is its integration of the Trophy active protection system. This state-of-the-art system is designed to detect and neutralize incoming anti-tank missiles and rocket-propelled grenades, significantly enhancing the tank's survivability on the battlefield. Additionally, the Merkava 4 is designed with crew safety in mind, featuring advanced systems for crew protection and a rear compartment that can be used for additional personnel or cargo.
