The integration of Expal's operations into Rheinmetall has significantly increased the Group's production capabilities, particularly in artillery, mortar, and medium-caliber ammunition. The company now operates under the name "Rheinmetall Expal Munitions S.A.U." and aims to reinforce its position as a supplier to NATO armed forces.
The global demand for ammunition continues to rise due to increased military equipment requirements in various countries. Rheinmetall's acquisition provides expedited access to enhanced production capacity, including multiple facilities in Spain and a demilitarization and soil remediation business in the United States.
Rheinmetall's role as a supplier to the Ukrainian armed forces is expected to expand with this acquisition, as they provide a range of medium- and large-caliber ammunition. This includes 20mm automatic cannon rounds for the Marder infantry fighting vehicle and 105mm and 120mm tank ammunition for the Leopard 1 and Leopard 2. Additionally, preparations are underway for the shipment of 35mm ammunition for the Gepard anti-aircraft vehicle.
The acquisition further solidifies and broadens Rheinmetall's core business in weapons, ammunition, and propellants. Rheinmetall Expal Munitions now offers artillery ammunition, mortar and medium-caliber rounds, fuses, and rocket propulsion systems. Anticipating sustained demand for ammunition in multiple countries, Rheinmetall is well-prepared to address complex ammunition procurement needs.
This strategic move also expands Rheinmetall's footprint in Spain, where the Group already has an automotive engineering plant in Abadiano. Rheinmetall Expal Munitions will continue to serve as a preferred partner for the Spanish armed forces, offering its products, technology, and industrial capabilities.
Rheinmetall remains committed to preserving the technology and workforce of the acquired company. All locations, including Madrid, Trubia, Burgos, Navalmoral, El Gordo, Albacete, and Murcia in Spain, as well as Texarkana in the USA, will remain fully operational, with plans for further expansion to meet growing demand.
