Russia introduces mobile bunker on skis for the war in Ukraine.
On August 31, 2023, Moscow unveiled a mobile bunker equipped with "skis" allowing for smooth mobility across various terrains, including snow, according to Alexey Devyatilov, CEO of Dorgeotech, the company responsible for its development. The invention is rather unusual but shows considerable potential.

Devyatilov revealed that the bunker's "skis" are made from a rounded metal profile, resembling the curves typically found on sleds. This design feature not only provides the bunker with good stability but also allows for easier transportation. "The skis eliminate the need for cranes or other heavy machinery. A simple quad bike can move the bunker," explained the CEO of Dorgeotech. The design was influenced by direct feedback from Russian troops involved in the conflict in Ukraine. "Imagine needing to relocate a frontline bunker by a few hundred meters. Now, our forces can simply attach a winch to the bunker and move it efficiently over short distances," Devyatilov added. Discussions are taking place to integrate these mobile bunkers into Russia's defense procurement plans, aimed at enhancing the safety of its military personnel. Devyatilov emphasized that the bunkers would undergo state evaluation for potential use on the battlefield in Ukraine.
The CEO also noted that the bunkers are continually being updated for a better user experience. Features like foldable shelves, hooks, and hangers have been added, along with attachments for hanging ropes to aid in drying clothes. These small details, although minor, can be significant for the practicality of the building.
The mobile bunker can accommodate up to 18 people for short-term stays and 9 for extended periods. Weighing 1.8 tons, the bunker has a diameter ranging from 2 to 2.2 meters and a length of 4.5 meters. It is equipped with a heating stove and offers protection against grenade impacts and shrapnel.
It should be noted that to fully utilize its defensive capabilities, the bunker will likely need to be buried, which unfortunately will reduce its mobility. In cases of unplanned movement, the ski-equipped bunker may not be very practical and could be the least of the concerns for Russian forces. However, it could prove useful for quickly fortifying a given area; its strength may lie more in its speed of installation than in its mobility.
The real utility of this new bunker on the battlefield remains to be seen. For now, it is still unknown when these ski-equipped bunkers will appear on the front lines.
