Russian Army in Ukraine receives new RDG-U smoke grenades.

| 2023

The Russian army has received a new type of smoke grenade, the RDG-U, which is said to be capable of providing camouflage against guided missiles. Developed by the Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering (TsNIITochMash JSC), the RDG-U has been approved for mass production after receiving an O1 designation from the Interdepartmental Commission.

This unified RDG-U smoke grenade could effectively conceal both personnel and equipment from high-precision guided missiles. The casing of the grenade is made from a composite material, ensuring safety during use, storage, and transportation. It has a casing diameter of 54mm, a length of 200mm, and weighs 700 grams with the fuse attached.

The RDG-U underwent tests that concluded in February 2023 and was recognized as an invention by the Russian Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent) in late 2022. A corresponding patent was granted, highlighting several advantages over existing models. These include increased smoke screen density due to the rapid spread of numerous burning pyro-elements, extended concealment duration thanks to continuous aerosol feeding from smoke-emitting pellets, and short-term concealment from infrared detection of high-precision weapons due to the formation of higher-temperature zones.

The grenade operates on a combined principle: its smoke-generating composition creates an instant smoke screen upon activation. In addition to the smoke screen, the grenade features a smoldering element that maintains the screen for an extended period. Developers claim that the RDG-U allows soldiers to create their own smoke screens without the need for specialized equipment or experts in radiological, chemical, and biological protection.

The RDG-U grenade was first showcased at the international military-technical forum "Army-2022." It began to be mass-produced in July 2023 and will now be sent to Russian forces present on the Ukrainian battlefield.
