Serbian defense industry enhances artillery capabilities with Tamnava MLRS development.

| 2023

Currently being showcased at the Partner 2023 salon in Serbia, the Tamnava Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) marks a significant addition to Serbia's artillery capabilities. Built on a Kamaz 6560 8x8 military truck chassis, the system is designed for modularity, allowing for the use of different types of launch pods capable of firing either 122 mm or 262 mm rockets.

In the 122 mm configuration, the system comes equipped with two pods of 24 launcher tubes each, and an additional pack of 48 rockets is stored near the rear of the crew cab for quick reloading. For the 262 mm rockets, the system uses two pods of six launcher tubes each, as it can be seen in the picture above. Rockets can be loaded using a hoisting device mounted on the rear of the crew cabin, and disposable launch tubes are also an option.

The Tamnava MLRS is fully automated, featuring GPS and INS navigation systems that enable it to execute pre-defined missions autonomously. Rockets can be launched either singly or in salvos at interval times ranging from 0,3 s to 1,5 s. The system offers manual, semi-automatic, or fully automatic control options and can be operated from inside the crew cab or via an optional 25 m off-vehicle remote-control box cable system. The 122 mm rockets have a maximum firing range of 40 km, while the 262 mm rockets can reach up to 70 km.

The system requires 120 seconds to prepare for firing and can vacate a firing position in less than 60 seconds. The crew cabin is designed with protective features against small arms fire, and the vehicle accommodates a crew of three. All firing operations can be conducted from inside the cabin. Additional features include a roof-mounted 12,7 mm machine gun and smoke-grenade dischargers on each side of the crew cab.

The Tamnava is powered by a KamAZ-740.35-400 diesel engine, has a total weight of 38,000 kg, and measures 10,36 m in length. The truck can reach a maximum speed of 90 km/h and has a maximum cruising range of 1,000 km.
