The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), initially formed from the Arab Janjaweed tribal militia and under the command of General Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, are the most powerful military force opposed to the Sudanese government. The RSF, formerly subordinate to the government, is now in conflict with it. They are known to have close ties with Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army and the Russian private military group Wagner.

The Pantsir-S1 system, a Russian air-defense missile system, is designed to protect military and civilian installations from aircraft, helicopters, drones, and precision weapons. With a range of 20 km and capable of engaging targets flying at an altitude of 15 km, the Pantsir is highly valued for its versatility and effectiveness.

The circumstances of the rebels' capture of the Pantsir system remain unclear. Images circulating on the internet show armed individuals, not affiliated with the government forces, escorting the system. It seems likely that this system has fallen into the hands of the RSF, Sudan's largest anti-government armed formation.

There is also a possibility that other rebel groups are involved. Given the RSF's links with Haftar, whose troops had Pantsir systems supplied by the United Arab Emirates, it is plausible that the system was acquired through this connection. However, it could also simply be the transportation of a system already in service with the RSF.
