On January 19, 2023, the Swedish Ministry of Defense announced a new military aid for Ukraine including the donation of CV90 tracked armored IFVs and ARCHER 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers. It is the third and largest military aid package from Sweden.
The package includes a procurement cooperation scheme, instructions to the Swedish Armed Forces to prepare the transfer of the Archer Artillery System, and the largest defense equipment package to date. This includes recoilless rifles with ammunition, anti-tank weapons, assault rifles, mine clearance equipment, Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90) with ammunition, and light anti-armor weapon Robot 57 (NLAW), worth around €385 billion.
The CV90 (Combat Vehicle 90) is a family of tracked armored Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) developed and manufactured by the Swedish company BAE Systems Hägglunds. The CV90 is designed to be a highly mobile and well-protected vehicle that can be used in a variety of roles, including reconnaissance, infantry fighting, and support.
The CV9040 is a variant of the CV90 IFV family of armored fighting vehicles developed by BAE Systems Hägglunds. It is an upgraded version of the CV9035 and features improved armor, a more powerful engine, and additional equipment.

The hull of the CV9040 is of all-welded steel construction with the driver seated front left, the power pack to his right, the turret in the center and offset to the left, and the troop compartment at the rear of the hull. It has a crew of three with the driver seated at the front left side of the hull and a gunner and commander in the turret. It can carry eight infantrymen.
The CV9040 is equipped with advanced armor to protect the vehicle and its crew from a variety of threats. The armor is made up of a combination of steel, aluminum, and ceramic materials, and is designed to provide a high level of protection against small arms fire, artillery fragments, and anti-tank weapons. The vehicle's hull is also designed to provide protection against mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The CV9040's armor can be upgraded with additional modular armor packages to enhance its protection against specific threats. The vehicle also has a high level of mobility and agility, which allows it to quickly move to different positions and evade potential threats.
The main armament of the CV9040 or Strf 9040 includes a 40 mm Bofors Defence 40/70B cannon with the ammunition being fed from underneath and the empty cartridge cases ejected out of the roof. The 40 mm gun can be aimed and fired by the commander or gunner selecting single shots at 60 rds/min, or automatic with 300 rds/min cyclic rate of fire. Maximum effective ranges are 2,000 m for ground targets and 4,000 m for air targets.
