Syria witnesses deployment of additional American HIMARS rocket system.

According to an article released by Mehr News on July 18, 2023, Syria has recently witnessed the arrival of a second series of American M142 HIMARS missile systems. It is likely that these systems were transferred by the United States to their local ally, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who maintain control over the northeast and eastern regions where the US currently has a minimum of 900 troops stationed.

As per a Forbes article published in late May 2023, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) acknowledged the transfer of an unspecified quantity of truck-mounted rocket launchers to its allied forces. The HIMARS system serves as a reliable means of force protection, offering swift responses to ground-based threats.

While the primary objective of the United States military in Syria remains combating the Islamic State group, they have also retained the prerogative to defend themselves and retaliate against attacks from other factions, including militias that have targeted U.S. troops using rockets and explosive drones.

The M142 HIMARS, an immensely mobile artillery rocket system developed by Lockheed Martin for the United States Army, has gained recognition for its precision and extended reach. The deployment of such advanced technology showcases the sophisticated tactics employed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The HIMARS comprises a solitary launch pod capable of housing either six M30 guided rockets or one Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missile.

The M30 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS), also referred to as the GMLRS Unitary Rocket, serves as the primary munition for the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).

The M30 rocket relies on GPS guidance, endowing it with a remarkable degree of accuracy. Under optimal circumstances, its circular error probable (CEP), a measure of precision, is less than 5 meters, ensuring reliable strikes in close proximity to the intended target.

Featuring a unitary warhead, the M30 contains a single, substantial explosive instead of numerous smaller submunitions. This design characteristic renders the M30 ideal for missions prioritizing minimal collateral damage, as it delivers a solitary and potent strike rather than dispersing submunitions across a wide area.

With a maximum range of approximately 70 kilometers (~43.5 miles), although subject to specific mission parameters and conditions that may cause variations, the M30 possesses formidable long-range capabilities. Combined with its accuracy and formidable warhead, the M30 emerges as an effective instrument for precise attacks against high-value targets, including enemy artillery, command and control centers, and critical infrastructure.
