US M1288 GMV 1.1 Special Forces vehicles are now in service with UAE Army.

The UAE armed forces are now equipped with the American-made M1288 GMV 1.1, a U.S. Special Operations Command light utility vehicle based on the General Dynamics Flyer 72.

During the Union Fortress 8, a military live demonstration of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) armed forces that was held in March 2022, several M1288 GMV 1.1 Special Forces vehicles were presented during the event. Until now, no official information has been released regarding the sale of these vehicles to the UAE armed forces.

The M1128 is the U.S. Army name of the Flyer 72 which is in service with the United States Special Operations Command. The vehicle has been jointly designed and manufactured by the American companies General Dynamics & Flyer Defense LLC.

The Flyer 72 is a non-developmental item, a purpose-built, lightweight vehicle designed to meet complex mission sets. Selected by the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) as the vehicle of choice for their Ground Mobility 1.1 (GMV 1.1) program, at 72” wide it is capable of internal transport in the CH-47 and C-130 aircraft.

The Flyer 72 is a mature, highly mobile platform, with a payload capacity of over 2,500 kg, that can be configured to multiple crew sizes (up to nine). It can be gun up in less than one minute after exiting the aircraft and is capable of carrying a variety of armaments. Its adaptable communications suite provides an increased operating range and provides the operator with real-time access to critical information.

The UAE version of the M1288 GMV 1.1 is configured as APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) vehicle configured to carry seven troops with 3 seats at the front, 2 at the rear, 1 rear facing (with optional secondary seat kit,) and 1 gunner seat in the middle. The roof of the vehicle is fitted with a one-man open-top turret armed with one 12.7mm heavy machine gun.

The M1288 GMV 1.1 is powered by a 2.0 L GM DOHC BiTurbocharged Intercooled JP8/F24/Diesel engine coupled to an automatic transmission with 6-speed. It can run at a maximum road speed of 152 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 483 km. It can negotiate a gradient of 60% and a side slope of 40 %.
