Leading this initiative is the MADIS Mk 1, a crucial element in the Corps' broader plan to modernize its defense infrastructure and effectively respond to emerging security challenges. A key milestone for the MADIS Mk 1 was reached on September 27, 2023, during an integration test at the Yuma Proving Grounds. Overseen by a specialized testing unit, the system demonstrated its robust capabilities, indicating its readiness for future operational requirements.

The Marine Air Defense Integrated System Mk 1 is an advanced air defense platform designed to meet the complex and ever-changing needs of the U.S. Marine Corps. It is a multi-sensor, multi-weapon system that incorporates cutting-edge radar, detection, and tracking technologies, as well as weapon systems to provide comprehensive and integrated air defense coverage.

The MADIS Mk 1 is designed to be modular, allowing for great flexibility in its deployment. It can be mounted on various vehicles, including all-terrain vehicles, for maximum battlefield mobility. This modularity also allows for easy component upgrades, which is crucial for keeping the system up-to-date against emerging threats.

In terms of detection capabilities, the MADIS Mk 1 uses Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radars that offer excellent resolution and extended range. These radars are capable of tracking multiple targets simultaneously and distinguishing aerial threats from non-hostile objects with high accuracy. The system is also equipped with optical and infrared sensors for more precise target identification and better performance in low-light or adverse weather conditions.

As for firepower, the MADIS Mk 1 is equipped with various types of weapons, including surface-to-air missiles and anti-aircraft artillery systems. These weapons are integrated into an automated fire control system that allows for quick and accurate responses to aerial threats. The system is also capable of connecting to broader communication and data networks, enabling better coordination with other units and greater situational awareness.

The MADIS Mk 1 is a complete and integrated air defense solution that combines state-of-the-art detection technologies with robust firepower and high modularity. It is specifically designed to modernize existing Low Altitude Air Defense (LAAD) battalions and provide the Marine Corps with the necessary tools to confront modern and future aerial threats.

A central goal of the MADIS initiative is to improve Ground-Based Air Defense functions, with a particular focus on modernizing active Low Altitude Air Defense battalions. These units currently rely on manually operated Stinger missiles and radar systems, transported by two M1114 HMMWVs per section.
