The annual Republic Day parade, traditionally held at Rajpath in New Delhi but now referred to as Kartavya Path, will serve as the platform to introduce the MRSAM to the world. This parade not only marks the nation's 75th Republic Day but also showcases several military assets produced under the 'Make in India' initiative.

'Make in India' is a government-led initiative aimed at promoting and encouraging domestic manufacturing, and stimulating investments in various sectors, including defense. Among the range of military assets produced under this initiative are drone jammers, light tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and missile systems such as the MRSAM. This air defense system has been designed to replace the aging Soviet-made air defense systems currently in service with both the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army.

The MRSAM system is built on the Tata LPTA 3138 8x8 chassis and is capable of intercepting enemy aircraft, missiles, guided bombs, helicopters, and drones at distances exceeding 70 kilometers. This capability is attributed to the utilization of Barak 8 missiles manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). These missiles are launched vertically from canisters, ensuring comprehensive coverage and an extensive defense perimeter.

The Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) itself, manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited, is equipped with a dual guidance system incorporating both Command and Active Radar Seeker (RF) technologies. Its propulsion system employs a dual-pulse solid motor, and it is armed with a pre-fragmented warhead, featuring a proximity fuse for precision. The missile's control is assured by both a thrust vector control (TVC) system and an aerodynamic control system, while the flight time is approximately 230 seconds

The MRSAM missiles measure 4,500mm in length and 225mm in diameter, with a weight of 275 kg, and are adaptable for both ship and vehicle use, thanks to their vertical launch capability.

The Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) Mobile Launcher System (MLS), manufactured by Tata Advanced Systems, serves as a vehicle-mounted platform designed for launching MRSAM missiles. It houses essential components such as the Launch Control System (LCS), capable of accommodating up to eight Canisterised Missiles (CMs), an Intra Fire Unit communication system for coordination with the Combat Management System (CMS), and other necessary equipment. A single trailer efficiently transports the entire launch system, including its power generation system.

The MLS requires a dedicated crew/operator team to deploy it into and out of action, preparing it for operations, including missile launches. The launch process is exclusively controlled by the CMS, which communicates with the MLS either through cable or wireless connections. The MLS system comprises two main sub-systems: the towing vehicle (MLS Vehicle), also designated as the prime mover and the trailer platform.

Key features of the MLS include the use of all-electric drives, enabling operation in various weather conditions. It incorporates a dual redundant synchronized onboard power source, with backup power available for missile interfaces, ensuring functionality for up to 10 minutes at NTP (Normal Temperature and Pressure). Additionally, the system features a brushless motor and drive for the erection system, along with a mast standing at a height of 13.5 meters for Intra Firing Unit Communication. A noteworthy capability is its ability to deploy and operate without the need for a carrier vehicle, offering extended operational durations.
