New CAESAR Mk2 self-propelled howitzer debuts at Eurosatory 2024 with full CAESAR lineup.


At the Eurosatory 2024 exhibition, KNDS publicly introduced the CAESAR NG, also known as the CAESAR Mk2. This model was presented alongside other members of the CAESAR family, including the CAESAR Mk1 and the CAESAR 8x8. The CAESAR 6x6 Mk II, a 155mm/52 cal. self-propelled howitzer, represents a further development of the original CAESAR 6x6, incorporating new technologies and operational feedback.

Also designated as CAESAr Mk II, CAESAr NG, or CAESAr Mark II, the CAESAR Mk2 maintains the same barrel and breech as its predecessor but includes a new navigation unit and muzzle velocity radar, as well as increased cabin and tire protection. It features an engine twice as powerful as the Mk1, allowing for quicker deployment and redeployment. These enhancements aim to improve its mobility and operational efficiency.

The CAESAR 6x6 has demonstrated long-range artillery capabilities, with over 18,000 rounds fired in Iraq, where 70% were in CH5 and 6, and 90% in CH4 and above, under temperatures up to 47°C. Its performance in Ukraine since 2022 has shown high survivability and operational readiness, attributed to its rapid ammunition and fuel resupply capabilities, and the ability to fire directly from the ground. The system's design emphasizes robustness and ease of maintenance.

The CAESAR Mk1, currently deployed in Ukraine, has seen success, leading to increased orders. Over 600 CAESAR units, including both Mk1 and Mk2 versions, are now in service or on order in nine countries. The CAESAR User's Club, established in 2023, supports its growing user base. French artillery has used the CAESAR in operations in Afghanistan, Mali, and Iraq.

The CAESAR Mk2 has a minimum range of 4.5 kilometers and a maximum range of 40 kilometers with standard ammunition, extending to over 46 kilometers with Excalibur rounds and up to 55 kilometers with VLAP rounds, featuring a traverse angle of fire ranging from +/- 300 mils to 1174 mils (63°). It features reinforced ballistic and mine protection, a rate of fire of six rounds per minute, and can operate with a nominal crew of five, with a minimum crew of three. The system, powered by a 460 horsepower engine, has a combat weight of 26.7 tons and carries 18 rounds of onboard ammunition.

The CAESAR 6x6 Mk2 reflects advancements in self-propelled howitzer technology, integrating new features based on operational feedback and technological progress. Its deployment in various operations and the increasing number of orders from multiple countries indicate its role in modern military applications.

The CAESAR 6x6, developed by Nexter Systems, began development in the early 2000s to replace the older TRF1 towed artillery system. The first prototypes were mounted on a Unimog truck in 2003, with production starting in 2006 and initial deliveries to the French Army in 2008. The system provides mobile fire support for French and allied forces and has been adopted by several countries due to its strategic mobility and firepower.

Typically mounted on a Renault Sherpa 10 military truck chassis, the CAESAR 6x6 can be adapted to various other chassis based on customer requirements. It features a 155mm/52-caliber gun capable of firing up to six rounds per minute, with a maximum range of 42 kilometers using base bleed shells. Designed for rapid deployment and mobility, it can be airlifted in a C-130 transport aircraft. Its semi-automatic loading system and advanced fire control system enable efficient target engagement and disengagement.

The CAESAR 6x6 has been deployed in various conflicts and peacekeeping missions, including Afghanistan, Mali, Lebanon, Iraq, and Ukraine. Its design has been tested in diverse environments. The CAESAR 6x6 Mark II includes enhanced protection, a more powerful engine, and advanced electronic systems, ensuring it remains a key artillery system for the French Army and international customers.

The CAESAR 8x8, another development by Nexter Systems, was introduced at DSEI 2015. It was designed to meet high-intensity combat requirements and offers enhanced capabilities over the 6x6 version. Mounted on a Tatra 8x8 chassis, it provides increased mobility and higher payload capacity. The CAESAR 8x8 includes a fully automatic loading system, increasing the rate of fire to six rounds per minute and reducing operator fatigue. It carries 30 to 36 rounds, compared to the 18-round capacity of the 6x6 model, and features a more powerful 410 hp engine.

Equipped with advanced fire control systems, the CAESAR 8x8 can utilize a wider range of ammunition, including precision-guided munitions like the KATANA and BONUS shells, offering extended range and improved accuracy. These features make the CAESAR 8x8 a versatile artillery system for modern battlefield requirements, building on the operational experience of its predecessors.
