Norway strengthens air defense with advanced NASAMS systems.
The Norwegian government has announced the acquisition of new NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) air defense systems from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (Kongsberg). This initiative, valued at approximately 1.4 billion NOK, aims to bolster Norway's defense against aerial threats, with deliveries scheduled for 2026-2027.

The acquisition agreement with the Norwegian Defence Material Agency includes the addition of new multi-missile canister launchers and Fire Distribution Centers to the NASAMS system. This upgrade replaces systems that Norway previously donated to Ukraine, marking a commitment to maintaining a robust defense infrastructure. The latest generation of NASAMS delivered to Norway is designed to effectively counter contemporary and future aerial threats.
Norway's Defense Minister, Bjørn Arild Gram, emphasized the critical nature of air defense, particularly in light of the conflict in Ukraine. "The war in Ukraine has underscored the importance of air defense systems. Following a historic order for such systems before Christmas, we have expedited the acquisition process. This reacquisition marks a crucial first step," said Gram.
Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, highlighted the strategic importance of the state-of-the-art air defense system for Norway. "As the first user of NASAMS, Norway's continued partnership is essential for strengthening our defense capabilities and national security," Lie stated.
The NASAMS, initially deployed by the Norwegian armed forces in the 1990s, is now used by 13 nations worldwide. Known for its modularity and open architecture, NASAMS supports the integration of new technologies and capabilities, ensuring adaptability to evolving threats and missions throughout their service life. This system stands out for its versatility, meeting a broad spectrum of air defense needs.
Gro Jære, Director of the Norwegian Defence Material Agency, reflected on the balance between supporting Ukraine and ensuring Norway's defense readiness. "The project's rapid completion, in half the usual time, thanks to the concerted efforts of all involved, signifies a step forward in enhancing our national security," Jære noted.
The NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) is a medium to long-range air defense system, designed and developed by Norway. It uses missiles powered by a solid-fuel rocket motor, enabling them to reach aerial targets at a maximum distance of 180 kilometers. These missiles, weighing 152 kg, are equipped with an AIM-120C high explosive blast-fragmentation warhead, weighing 18.1 kg, designed to maximize effectiveness against various types of aerial threats.
Characterized by a speed of Mach 2.7 and dimensions of 3.7 meters in length, 0.18 meters in diameter, and a wingspan of 0.53 meters, this combination of speed, range, and explosive power makes NASAMS one of the most advanced and flexible air defense systems, capable of effectively responding to modern aerial threats.
Kongsberg is expanding its production capacity and strengthening its network of Norwegian and international suppliers to support defense preparedness at both the national and international levels. This strategic investment underscores Norway's commitment to maintaining a cutting-edge defense posture in the face of evolving global security challenges.
