Ahead of Ukraine's Independence Day, the Department of Defense announced today additional security assistance to address Ukraine's critical security and defense needs. In parallel, Ukraine has issued an official plea for help. This Presidential Initiative, estimated at $125 million, will provide Ukraine with additional capabilities to address its most urgent needs, including air defense capabilities, ammunition for rocket and artillery systems, and anti-tank weapons.
The features outlined in this announcement include: Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) equipment and ammunition, ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), 155 mm and 105 mm artillery ammunition, Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire-guided (TOW) missiles, Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems, High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) ambulances, small arms ammunition, medical equipment, demolition materials and munitions, spare parts, auxiliary equipment, services, training, and transportation.
As Ukraine prepares to celebrate its Independence Day on August 24 – more than two and a half years after the Kremlin launched its full-scale invasion – the United States and the international coalition of about 50 allies and partners remain committed to supporting Ukraine's defenders as they continue to fight against Russian aggression.
U.S. President Joe Biden also called Volodymyr Zelensky on the occasion of Ukraine's Independence Day to confirm the allocation of a new military aid program and to express his unwavering support for the Ukrainian people.
The Ukrainian president stated that the Ukrainian people are grateful to President Biden, his administration, Congress, and the entire American people for their unwavering support since the early days of the full-scale war. This allows us to survive and protect our state. Zelensky also noted the approval by the United States of another package of sanctions against Russia, and said that during the conversation, he emphasized the need to continue sanctions pressure on Russia. He added that he welcomed the new U.S. military aid program and specified that Ukraine urgently needs the delivery of weapons from the announced programs, particularly additional air defense systems, to reliably protect cities and critical infrastructure.
The Biden administration also stated that it is "open" to sending JASSM missiles to Ukraine. These issues include reviewing the transfer of sensitive technologies and ensuring that Ukrainian aircraft can launch the 2,400-pound missile carrying a 1,000-pound warhead.
