SOFINS 2025: Operational Urgency and Disruptive Tech in Focus with Benoît de Saint Sernin.

In this exclusive interview, Benoît de Saint Sernin, Director of SOFINS, outlines the priorities of the 2025 edition held at Camp de Souge near Bordeaux. Topics include the growing importance of delivery timelines, shifting toward high-intensity operations in colder environments, and integrating disruptive technologies such as directed energy weapons. The event also highlights the SOFLAB and SOFTECH SI initiatives, designed to support innovative companies, and features “Combaterre”, a seminar in partnership with the French Army to address future capability needs. A comprehensive overview of the key operational and industrial trends shaping SOFINS 2025.

SOFINS 2025 maintains a selective format, with a stable number of exhibitors but a stronger focus on responsiveness. This year marks a notable shift in visitor expectations. Operational decision-makers are increasingly prioritizing delivery timelines over cost, reflecting an urgent demand for rapidly available solutions. In a competitive global market, production lead time has become a critical factor in procurement decisions.

This shift coincides with a transformation in the operational posture of the French Special Forces. Traditionally deployed in asymmetric contexts, particularly in Africa, they are now preparing for possible engagements in colder environments against technologically capable adversaries. This evolution requires adjustments in equipment, mobility, camouflage, and logistics. The need to counter air threats, drones, radar systems, and satellite-based surveillance also introduces new constraints on operational planning and execution.

SOFINS 2025 is also attracting international delegations interested in observing the systems used or under development for French special operations units. These delegations are not only seeking information but also evaluating the feasibility of adopting similar capabilities. However, the ability to deliver quickly remains a central concern. Countries with faster industrial processes or pre-existing stockpiles may have a significant advantage in securing contracts.

The 2025 edition also highlights emerging defense technologies. Among them, directed energy weapons, such as laser systems presented at the event, are drawing attention. These systems represent a significant shift in future threat landscapes and are already prompting discussions about protection measures, tactical adaptation, and changes to force preparation.

Innovation is another core aspect of SOFINS, notably through the SOFLAB and SOFTECH SI initiatives. Twenty start-ups have been selected from more than two hundred applicants to showcase their solutions. They are joined by another twenty companies identified as high-potential firms now entering the scale-up phase. These programs create a platform for emerging defense technologies, offering direct access to operational feedback and institutional stakeholders.

On the event's final day, the “Combaterre” seminar will take place, developed in cooperation with the French Army’s General Staff. Designed as an operational forum, it enables intra-service discussions and direct exchanges with industry representatives, aiming to better define capability requirements and accelerate innovation cycles.

SOFINS 2025 reflects a broader shift in defense priorities, where production responsiveness, adaptation to high-intensity scenarios, and technological transformation are taking precedence. Through a curated selection of companies and direct dialogue between users and industry, the event continues to play a strategic role in shaping the future of special operations.
