The state-owned company dependent on this portfolio will be in charge of the development of the basic engineering and the construction plan of a vessel that is important in the framework of the National Government's project to advance in an Antarctic program to protect the sovereignty and interests of the country.
The new polar ship will have a length of 131,5 m, a beam of 23,6 m, and could reach a top speed of 16 knots.
Argentinian Navy already has the ARA Almirante Irizar, after repairs, that supplies the Argentine bases in Antarctica. The country has also decided to reopen the Petrel Base in Antarctica, a non-permanent Argentine scientific station located on Dundee Island, in the Joinville Group, in Graham Land, part of the Argentinian claim on Antarctica.
ARA Almirante Irízar is a large icebreaker of the Argentine Navy. She was ordered from a shipyard in Finland in 1975. The vessel was built at the Wärtsilä Helsinki Shipyard in Finland, under a contract signed in 1975 between the Argentine Navy and the shipyard.
Irízar was launched in February 1978 and was formally commissioned in December that year, arriving in Argentina on 23 March 1979.
