The vessels are built to domestic tanker specifications at a cost of 5.1 billion yen for both of them. They have a displacement of 4,900 tons and YOT-01 is expected to enter service in the spring of 2022.
They are built at Shin Kurushima Hashiham Dockyard of Shin Kurushima Dockyard Group. This is the first time that the firm built ships for the Japan Ministry of Defense.
An oil tanker, also known as a petroleum tanker, is a ship designed for the bulk transport of oil or its products. There are two basic types of oil tankers: crude tankers and product tankers. Crude tankers move large quantities of unrefined crude oil from its point of extraction to refineries. Product tankers, generally much smaller, are designed to move refined products from refineries to points near consuming markets.
Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co. Ltd. operates a shipbuilding business. The Company offers ship construction, repair, and demolition services. Shin Kurushima Dockyard also produces and repairs shipbuilding equipment.
