According to information published by the Chinese MoD on June 25, 2023, the 43rd Chinese naval escort taskforce docked in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire's economic powerhouse, for a four-day visit aimed at promoting goodwill.

The Type 054A frigate is an impressive vessel, measuring 134.1 meters (440 feet) in length with a beam of 16 meters (52 feet). Its full displacement comes in at 4,053 tonnes.

This warship uses CODAD propulsion with 4 Shaanxi 16 PA6 STC diesel engines, each capable of producing 5700 kW (7600+ hp @ 1084 rpm), which allows it to reach an estimated speed of 27 knots and travel an estimated range of 8,025 nautical miles (9,235 miles; 14,862 km).

The Type 054A frigate can accommodate a complement of 165 personnel and is equipped with an extensive array of sensors and processing systems. These include the Type 382 Radar, Type 344 Radar for over-the-horizon target acquisition and surface-to-surface missile fire control, four Type 345 Radars for surface-to-air missile fire control, the MR-36A surface search radar, and the Type 347G 76 mm gun fire control radar.

She also has two Racal RM-1290 navigation radars, a MGK-335 active/passive sonar system, an H/SJG-206 towed array sonar, and the ZKJ-4B/6 combat data system.

The frigate uses HN-900 Data link (Chinese equivalent of Link 11A/B, to be upgraded), SNTI-240 SATCOM, and AKD5000S Ku band SATCOM for communication.

Type 054A's electronic warfare and decoy equipment includes the Type 922-1 radar warning receiver, HZ-100 ECM & ELINT system, and Kashtan-3 missile jamming system.

Her armament comprises a 32-cell VLS HQ-16 surface-to-air missile system, Yu-8 anti-submarine rocket launchers, 2 sets of 4 C-803 anti-ship / land attack cruise missiles, a PJ26 76 mm dual purpose gun, and two Type 730 7-barrel 30 mm close-in weapon systems or Type 1130.

Sanya also possesses two sets of 3 324mm Yu-7 ASW torpedo launchers, two sets of 6 Type 87 240mm anti-submarine rocket launchers (with a total of 36 rockets), and two Type 726-4 18-tube decoy rocket launchers.
