The production process of "Al-Qadeer" began in the fall of 2020 with the initial steel cutting, followed by the keel laying in March 2021, launching in April 2022, and its naming in October 2022. The frigate is soon expected to set sail for Alexandria, Egypt.
Vice Admiral Ashraf Ibrahim Atwa, the commander-in-chief of the Egyptian Navy, emphasized that the rapid acquisition of these three Meko A-200 frigates - Al-Aziz, Al-Qahhar, and Al-Qadeer - within just 14 months demonstrates the extent of cooperation and friendship between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Federal Republic of Germany.
In addition to "Al-Qadeer," the fourth and final Meko A200 frigate, named "Sajm Al-Jabbar," was launched on December 4, 2023, at the Alexandria shipyard in Egypt, marking the first frigate built in Egypt under the ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) license. This frigate was launched during the EDEX 2023 defense exhibition in Cairo, attended by high-ranking officials, including Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi. The delivery of "Sajm Al-Jabbar" is scheduled for October 2025.
The Meko A200 class frigates, designed by Blohm+Voss (now part of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems), are known for their modular and adaptable design. These frigates are 121 meters long, 16.4 meters wide, and have a draft of 4.4 meters, with a displacement of 3700 tons. They are powered by a CODAG propulsion system, including a GE LM2500 gas turbine and two MTU 16V 1163 TB93 diesel engines, enabling a maximum speed of 28 knots. Their armament includes a Leonardo 127/64 LW 127 mm main gun, 16 MM-40 Exocet block 3 anti-ship missiles, 32 VLS for MBDA VL MICA NG surface-to-air missiles, and 2×2 MU90 Eurotorp torpedoes for ASW targets.
These frigates are also equipped with a towed array sonar and a Thales NS-110 4D AESA radar for navigation and surveillance. They can reach a speed of 29 knots and have a range of 7200 nautical miles at 16 knots.
The reception of these Meko A-200 EN frigates, among the most powerful in their class, represents a significant step in the development of Egypt's naval capabilities and further strengthens its position as an important regional actor.
