The Ruggiero di Lauria is a testament to the Italian Navy's ongoing efforts to modernize its fleet, an initiative that began in earnest in May 2015 under the "Naval Act". This endeavor is being overseen by OCCAR, the international organization renowned for arms cooperation.

The PPA is not just any vessel; it's designed for versatility. It can seamlessly transition from sea patrolling and rescue missions to more intensive Civil Protection operations.

Depending on the mission at hand, its combat system can be adjusted from a basic patrol setup to a fully-equipped frontline combat mode. A standout feature of the ship is its capability to operate high-speed vessels, such as the 11-meter long RHIB, using its lateral cranes or a hauling ramp located at its stern.

The ship boasts a length of 143 meters and can achieve speeds exceeding 31 knots, depending on its configuration and the prevailing operational conditions.

She can accommodate a crew of 171 personnel. Her advanced propulsion system integrates a combined diesel, a gas turbine plant, and an electric drive. Additionally, she has the unique capability to supply drinkable water to land.

Fincantieri's Integrated Shipyard of Riva Trigoso and Muggiano have been entrusted with the construction of these Multipurpose Offshore Patrol ships, with deliveries projected to continue until 2026.
