The Calhoun, part of the Coast Guard's Legend-class cutters, has a displacement of 4,500 long tons and measures 418 ft in length. Its breadth of 54 ft and a draft of 22.5 ft lend it stability in diverse marine conditions.

A combined diesel and gas propulsion system enables the cutter to reach a top speed of 28 knots (52 km/h; 32 mph). With a range of 12,000 nautical miles and the capacity for 60 to 90-day patrol cycles, the Calhoun showcases long-distance operation and sustainability.

The cutter accommodates a crew of 120 and is equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and processing systems, including AN/SPS-75 air search radar, SPQ-9B fire control radar, and AN/SPS-79 surface search radar.

Calhoun's defense systems include an AN/SLQ-32 electronic warfare system and two Mk-36 SRBOC/ 2 x Mk-53 NULKA countermeasures chaff/rapid decoy launchers.

The vessel's armament comprises a Mk-110 57mm Naval Gun System, a 20mm Block 1B Phalanx close-in weapons system, four .50 caliber machine guns, and two M240B 7.62mm machine guns, with ballistic protection for the main gun.

The vessel's aviation capabilities include either two MH-65C Dolphin MCH or a combination of one MH-65C Dolphin MCH and two small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS).
