The contract, worth approximately Rs 19,000 crore ($ 2300000), encompasses the acquisition of five indigenously designed and constructed Fleet Support Ships (FSS) for the Indian Navy. This strategic initiative aligns with the nation's aspiration for an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat'.
Fleet Support Ships
These vessels, with a displacement of 45,000 t (44,289 long tons) and a length of 230 meters, will act as floating hubs. They are designed to provide naval vessels with essentials such as fuel, water, and ammunition, minimizing the need for frequent harbor stops.
Their utility extends beyond mere logistics. The FSS is expected to enhance the Navy's strategic outreach and expand its blue-water operations. In terms of humanitarian endeavors, these ships are geared to be instrumental in evacuations and disaster relief operations.
Interestingly, these are the first Fleet Support Ships to be built in India. Emphasizing self-reliance, the majority of the ship's components and systems are sourced from local manufacturers.
As for its performance metrics, the ship can reach speeds of 20 knots and cover a distance of 12,000 nautical miles at 15-16 knots. It is also equipped to accommodate an HAL Dhruv helicopter.
