The last of the series, the 46th SH-90A ASW/ASuW helicopter, was assembled at the Venice Tessera site and presented on 29 September at a ceremony attended by representatives from the Italian Navy, Leonardo, and NHIndustries.
This addition, along with ten MH-90As focused on tactical transport and special operations, brings the Italian Navy's total NH90 fleet to 56 helicopters. Since the first delivery in 2011, these helicopters have logged over 35,000 flight hours, participating in various operations in Italy and abroad.
Alongside the helicopter deliveries, the Maristaeli Luni Base unveiled its Full Crew Simulation Training Centre. Developed by Leonardo, this centre includes a Level D Full Flight Simulator, reflecting the most recent avionics standards.
Customized to the requirements of the Italian Navy, this training environment provides SH-90 and MH-90 crews with realistic training experiences. With its adaptable architecture, the facility's training systems can undergo future expansions, potentially allowing for interconnected simulations. Notably, the centre is also equipped to offer training to NH90 crews from other nations.
Leonardo's Involvement with the NH90
Leonardo was responsible for various aspects of the NH90's development, from designing and integrating critical systems and components to advanced capabilities.
Their contributions extend to systems like the Laser Obstacle Avoidance Monitoring (LOAM), the LEOSS-T electro-optical system, and multiple weapon systems.
Overview of the NH90 Helicopter
The NH90 is a significant military helicopter initiative in Europe. Characterized by its spacious design and adaptability, it incorporates a fly-by-wire control system.
The helicopter is available in two main versions: the naval-focused NH90 NFH and the land-operations TTH. As of the recent update, over 500 NH90 helicopters have been delivered globally, accumulating more than 380,000 flight hours in various conditions and terrains.
