The project began in 2016, with the Vympel shipyard producing the vessels, alternatively known as upgraded Project 1496M1 or Project 1496M1E. From 2018 to 2020, five such patrol ships, "Orlan", "Korshun", "Krechet", "Grif", and "Sarych", were built for the Coastal Guard and currently serve in the Black Sea.
The initial steps to build "Burevestnik", the sixth border patrol ship (BPS), began with a keel-laying ceremony at Vympel on December 18, 2020. Its launch in 2023 anticipates a commission later the same year, while a seventh vessel (factory number 01416) is also under construction.
Starting in 2020, the "Yaroslavl Shipbuilding Plant" (PAO) also began producing BPS under Project 03050. Two of these vessels, with factory numbers 751 and 752, were laid in October 2020, launched in May 2022, and await commissioning after sea trials that began in August 2022 for the lead ship, "Yastreb". Two more vessels (factory numbers 753 and 754) were laid down in Yaroslavl in 2022.
Project 03050, also referred to as the upgraded Project 1496M1, represents a substantial departure from the previous Projects 1496M and 1496M1 patrol boats.
Developed by Vympel's Future Shipbuilding Department, with the Central Marine Research and Design Institute (CNIIMF), the new design meets the Border Service's enhanced specifications for technical performance and crew comfort.
The modernized boats offer broad patrol functionality, efficiency, and advanced navigation and communication systems, powered by YaMZ 8401 engines with a combined 3x800 hp.
Technical data
The ship has a full displacement of 131 tons and measures 30.8 meters in length and 6.7 meters in width. At maximum displacement, the draft is 2.0 meters.
She can achieve a speed of at least 18 knots and, with maximum supplies, it can cover a cruising range of 2000 miles. The ship also has an autonomy of 20 days.
