The Akya torpedo, developed by Roketsan, is a new-generation heavyweight torpedo designed for launching from submarines to engage both submarine and surface targets. This advanced torpedo is notable for its high speed and long range, with a range of over 50 kilometers and a speed exceeding 45 knots.
Technical features of the Akya torpedo include a proximity/impact fuse, a warhead designed for underwater shock effect, and a launch type of swim-out. It employs active/passive sonar head for guidance with acoustic countermeasure capability and wake homing. The propulsion system comprises a brushless DC electrical motor and a counter-rotating propeller system, powered by a high-energy chemical battery.
The Akya torpedo's launch from the TCG Preveze is part of the broader modernization efforts for the Preveze-class submarines, which have been equipped with the MÜREN combat management system.
This system, developed indigenously by TÜBİTAK BILGEM in collaboration with the Turkish Navy's Research and Development Command and Golcuk Naval Shipyard, is a key component in modernizing the combat management systems of Preveze-class submarines.
The MÜREN-PREVEZE program, initiated in 2017, aims to replace the ISUS-83/2 CMS onboard Preveze-class submarines with the MÜREN CMS, allowing these submarines to launch both the DM2A4 SeaHake and indigenous Akya heavyweight torpedoes.
