The exercise involved a U.S. Navy MH-60R Seahawk helicopter from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 35 and the Chilean Navy submarine CS Carrera (SS 22). This operation was part of the Diesel-Electric Submarine Initiative (DESI) program, initiated in 2001 by U.S. Fleet Forces Command.

The DESI program collaborates with South American submarine-operating navies for fleet readiness exercises. During the exercise, the MH-60R Seahawk executed a hoisting operation over the Chilean submarine.

The CS Carrera (SS 22) is a Chilean Navy submarine belonging to the Scorpène-class, known for its stealth capabilities and advanced technology. These diesel-electric powered submarines are equipped with sophisticated sonar systems and carry torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, making them versatile in various combat scenarios. They also have significant underwater endurance and range, allowing for extended missions.

The MH-60R Seahawk helicopter, used by the U.S. Navy's Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 35, is a multi-mission helicopter designed for a range of roles including anti-submarine warfare and search and rescue.

It features advanced sensors, including radar and sonar systems, for detecting and tracking submarines and surface ships. The MH-60R can be armed with torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and machine guns, and is equipped with communication and navigation systems for effective coordination. Additionally, it has a hoisting system, which was demonstrated in the exercise with the CS Carrera.
