One of the key advancements in the Block IV configuration is the reduction in maintenance periods, allowing for increased operational availability.

The design changes focus on reducing total ownership costs, with these submarines expected to conduct 15 deployments over their service life compared to the 14 deployments of earlier blocks. This is achieved by decreasing the number of planned maintenance periods from four to three, thus extending their time at sea and increasing their mission readiness.

Block IV submarines, such as the USS Massachusetts (SSN-798) and the USS Iowa (SSN-797), incorporate several technological improvements.

These include enhanced stealth features, improved sonar systems, and advanced weaponry, such as the Mark 48 torpedoes and the capability to launch Tomahawk missiles from two large-diameter Virginia Payload Tubes. This design allows the submarines to carry a larger payload compared to previous versions.

These submarines also support special operations forces, with features like a redesigned torpedo room that can be converted to accommodate SEALs and their equipment.

They are equipped with two photonics masts, replacing traditional periscopes, which provide high-resolution cameras and improved situational awareness for the crew.
