Spanish shipyard Navantia has confirmed that the Indian Navy will evaluate critical equipment at their Cartagena facility. This project aims to procure six advanced submarines equipped with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems.

The field trials, specifically focusing on the AIP system, are scheduled for the last week of June.

About the collaboration between Navantia and the Indian Navy

Navantia has signed a teaming agreement with India's Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to submit a joint bid for the Indian Navy's Project 75 (I) submarine program. This partnership aims to deliver six conventional submarines equipped with advanced Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems, while achieving targeted indigenous content. The project is valued at over €4.8 billion and is part of India's largest defense acquisition initiative.

The agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in April 2023 in Madrid. Navantia plans to base the design of these submarines on its S80 class, which features state-of-the-art bioethanol-based AIP technology. This technology uses bioethanol to generate hydrogen, enhancing the submarines' operational efficiency and stealth capabilities while being environmentally friendly.
