Indonesian Navy launches two 60-meter patrol vessels: KRI Hampala-880 and KRI Lumba-Lumba-881.

According to information published by the Indonesian MoD on July 12, 2024, the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) held a ship naming and launch ceremony for two new 60-meter fast patrol boats, KRI Hampala-880 and KRI Lumba-Lumba-881, at the PT Caputra Mitra Sejati shipyard in Merak, Banten.

Admiral Ali highlighted the strategic importance of these new vessels in his address, noting that Indonesia's extensive maritime territory offers significant natural resources and potential, while also posing considerable maritime challenges and threats.

The evolving nature of these threats, driven by technological advancements and global competition, underscores the need for a robust and dynamic naval presence.

The KRI Hampala-880 and KRI Lumba-Lumba-881 will join the patrol units under the XI Merauke and XIII Tarakan Patrol Units (Satrol), enhancing the Indonesian Navy's capabilities in law enforcement and maritime security.

The development of these vessels also represents a significant achievement for the national defense industry, showcasing PT Caputra Mitra Sejati's capability to advance defense technology and reduce reliance on foreign sources.

Admiral Ali expressed hope that domestic defense industries will continue to innovate and enhance their capabilities to compete internationally, demonstrating Indonesia's ability to stand independently as a respected maritime nation.

About the patrol boats

The Dorang-class patrol boats, also known as the Type PC-60M, are a series of fast patrol vessels developed and built indigenously by various Indonesian shipyards, including PT Caputra Mitra Sejati and PT Karimun Anugrah Sejati.

Each Dorang-class vessel is 60 meters long, 8.5 meters wide, and has a draft of 2.72 meters. They displace between 440 and 520 tons and are powered by two MTU 20V400M73 diesel engines, providing a total power of 3,200 kW.

These engines enable the boats to reach a maximum speed of 24 knots, with a cruising speed of 17 knots and an economic speed of 15 knots. The ships have an operational endurance of six days and can carry up to 55 personnel (46 active and 9 reserve)​​.

The primary armament of the Dorang-class includes a 40-mm OTO Melara main gun equipped with a sophisticated fire control system that integrates a laser rangefinder, an infrared camera, and a day camera.

Additionally, the boats are fitted with two 12.7-mm heavy machine guns for defense against aerial threats. The design also allows for the installation of anti-ship missiles at the stern in emergencies, effectively upgrading them to fast missile crafts if needed​​.
