The deployment of the Italian CSG, which began in June 2024, included operations across the Indo-Pacific region, aiming to enhance interoperability with allied navies and showcase Italy's advanced maritime capabilities.

The Cavour, accompanied by the frigate Alpino and later joined by other naval assets, has engaged in a variety of multinational exercises and port visits, promoting Italy's defense partnerships and capabilities. The CSG's itinerary included stops in Singapore, Australia, Japan, and several Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern countries.

A pivotal aspect of the deployment was participation in "Pitch Black 2024," a biennial air combat exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force.

This exercise provided a critical platform for the Italian Navy's F-35B aircraft to operate alongside other international participants, testing their capabilities in a realistic operational environment. It was the first time that an Italian carrier group had participated directly from the sea.

The integration of the F-35B Lightning II into the Italian Navy's air wing represents a major leap forward in capability, allowing for a broad range of mission profiles, from air superiority and close air support to intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). The F-35B's short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) capabilities make it particularly well-suited for operations from the Cavour. The Italian Navy's plan to further expand its fleet of F-35Bs. Currently, the Navy operates six F-35Bs, with plans to increase this number.

The Italian Navy's deployment to the Indo-Pacific aligns with broader geopolitical trends, reflecting an increasing focus on the region's strategic importance. This deployment is not only a demonstration of military capability but also a strategic move to deepen ties with key regional partners.
