The "Ratownik" program, which could commence shortly, is a vital element in Poland's strategy to update its naval capabilities by replacing aging vessels, such as the ORP Piast and ORP Lech, with a rescue ship. This new vessel will be designed to conduct a wide range of missions, from rescuing submarine crews to supporting underwater operations and recovering submerged military technology.

Key Features and Capabilities

The "Ratownik" rescue vessel will be equipped with a variety of advanced systems, including cranes, remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), and sophisticated sonar technology.

These systems are intended not only for military rescue operations but also for supporting Poland's growing energy sector, particularly in the development of offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea. The modular design of the vessel allows it to be highly adaptable, capable of being configured for various roles, and equipped to work with unmanned systems and rescue helicopters. This flexibility will enable the vessel to perform tasks such as saturation diving, underwater repairs, and decontamination operations, crucial in scenarios involving potential chemical or radiological threats.

Broader Implications for Polish Naval Modernization

The "Ratownik" program is part of a broader effort by Poland to modernize its naval fleet. Poland is also advancing other key maritime programs, such as the "Miecznik" project, which involves the construction of new multi-role frigates. These initiatives are designed to enhance the operational capabilities of the Polish Navy, ensuring it can protect national interests in the Baltic Sea and beyond.

In addition to its military applications, the "Ratownik" vessel is expected to play a significant role in supporting Poland's expanding energy sector, particularly the development of offshore wind farms. This dual-use aspect aligns with Poland’s broader strategy of integrating defense assets with national infrastructure needs, thereby maximizing the return on investment in defense spending.
