According to information published by the US DoD on July 25, 2024, Raytheon Technologies has been awarded a significant contract valued at $1.94 billion for the manufacture and assembly of Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA All-Up Rounds.

Japan has actively engaged in developing and deploying the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) as part of its ballistic missile defense strategy. The SM-3, a key component of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System, is designed to intercept and destroy short- to intermediate-range ballistic missiles. Its "hit-to-kill" technology, which uses kinetic energy rather than an explosive warhead, enables it to neutralize threats with high precision.

The latest iteration, the SM-3 Block IIA, is a collaborative effort between the United States and Japan. This variant features significant upgrades, including larger rocket motors and a more advanced kinetic warhead, enhancing its interception capabilities against a broader range of ballistic missile threats. These improvements allow the missile to travel at higher speeds and cover greater distances, providing an extended defensive perimeter​​.

Japan's acquisition of the SM-3 Block IIA is part of a broader strategic initiative to bolster its defense against potential regional threats, particularly from North Korea's advancing missile capabilities.

Recent contracts have seen Japan committing substantial funds to procure these interceptors, with a notable $2 billion contract executed to secure the latest missiles​ (Inside Defense)​. Additionally, Japan received approval for a $3.3 billion purchase, including up to 73 SM-3 Block IIA missiles.
