Dmytro Pletenchuk, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, confirmed reports of increased Russian naval activity. He noted that this is the first instance of his neighbor deploying three submarines equipped with cruise missiles, potentially operating in both the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea, adding weight to the term "Black Sea Fleet."

Previously, Ukrainian military intelligence indicated that there were two Russian vessels in the Black Sea, each armed with up to eight Kalibr cruise missiles.

Historically, the Russian Navy has maintained a presence in the Black Sea, but this increased activity marks a departure from the relatively passive stance observed in recent months.

The current deployment includes the Project 636.3 Improved Kilo-class submarines, which have been used extensively to launch Kalibr cruise missiles against Ukrainian targets. These submarines are now operating from both Sevastopol for missile strikes and Novorossiysk for safety and reloading purposes.

The unusual mass exit of these submarines from their base at Novorossiysk has raised several hypotheses. Some analysts suggest that it might be a drill to test crew readiness or a precaution against potential Ukrainian maritime drone threats.

Another possibility is that these movements are part of a broader operation, potentially involving amphibious landings aimed at creating a land bridge to the Russian-supported region of Transnistria in Moldova. However, given the setbacks Russian forces have faced, such an operation appears less likely.
